BlackRefer,
It turns out Lil Mama will be going with "L.I.F.E." as the next single off her debut album, VYP: Voice of the Young People, in stores now. I previously sent out an email stating the next single would be "What It Is" featuring T-Pain, but this is no longer the case.
It's a very touching song... I really recommend you check it out here.

“I don’t necessarily want to fit into what’s happening now,” Lalah says of today’s marketplace, “but I want to stand with it, on my own thing. I would really love it if people need the record. I put a lot of myself into this album, so I hope people can hear me and understand who I am.”
Listen to "Let Go" below, the first single from Lalah's forthcoming set, SELF PORTRAIT in stores June 3rd.

ABOUT LALAH HATHAWAY
Ask her to describe her voice and she might say it feels like, sounds like, soul. But when it comes to defining the essence of music, itself, Lalah Hathaway can go on and on…
“Music is so textured and layered,” she says, “and it is an absolute entity in my life. It’s three-dimensional, it’s tangible, and when I die, I’ll say goodbye to it, just as I will to everyone standing around my bed.”
In the four years since she’s blessed the people with a set of songs, she’s been “working, writing music and living a very, simple life. Many people think that you’re just lounging between albums, but that time for me was about trying to find a place to land that will give you the opportunity to create something artful, something mindful,” Lalah notes.
With SELF PORTRAIT, (Stax Records/Concord Music Group), her fifth studio album, including the Joe Sample duet, and on which she co-wrote and co-produced, Hathaway is poised to express who she is, where she is, today, at this very moment. For starters, she is an artist, of course, but she’s also a devoted daughter, culture junkie and a good friend, even. But not necessarily in that order.
“This album is like a movie of my life over the last couple of years,” she says. “The portrait I see of myself is of a very confident, smart woman who is extremely funny, independently wealthy and well-traveled – all things that I am to a small degree., she laughs. “Every day, I realize that I’m walking toward the woman I’m going to be. She’s there. I can see her. “
Leading the 12-song collection is “Let Go,” a dance-oriented, up-tempo number she produced with Rex Rideout and wrote alongside Rahsaan Patterson. And just as the title suggests, the song is about acknowledging and releasing whatever’s not working to make room for the next experience. “I’ve had to let go of quite a few things, quite a few situations and a couple of mindsets,” she admits about the origins of her first single. “Every so often, I have to remind myself to just let some stuff go – from people and relationships to an old pair of jeans.”
While it might seem that “On Your Own,” which re-teams her with Rideout and Patterson, is inspired by a past heartbreak, in fact, the idea for the song came to her in a dream. “My father was singing to me and telling me that I could make it on my own,” she reflects. Keeping in step with the theme of family, she journeys back to her childhood with “Little Girl,” which she co-produced with Rideout and penned with Patterson and Sandra St. Victor. When she reminisces about growing up under the watchful eye of her mother, she’s always felt the presence of her father in her life.
On “That Was Then,” which she produced with Rideout and written with St. Victor, Hathaway recalls her former self and how much she didn’t know way back then. “I called Sandra in Amsterdam on a Tuesday and said, ‘I don’t know what to write,’” she says. “She was there, helping me craft the melody, by Friday. She’s a baaad girl.” Closing out the album is the Hathaway-produced, “Tragic Inevitability,” a song that stands out for her because of its fluidity. “My friend told me that she got some love while listening to this song, which horrified me and made me happy at the same time,” she remembers. “The track was sent to me by two cats from Amsterdam, Wiboud Burkens and Manuel Hugas, whom I met with Sandra. I just wrote the words that came to me.” As she sings about the things that will no longer be, you might actually feel soothed because, after all, the only constant is change. Life is funny that way.
Born to Donny Hathaway, one of the most influential soul artists of the seventies, and Eulaulah Hathaway, an accomplished musician in her own right, the Chicago native first put pen to paper, “with the music,” as a 10th grader. Later, as a student at Berklee College of Music, she recorded her self-titled debut in 1990, which spawned the hits “Baby Don’t Cry,” “Heaven Only Knows” and “I’m Coming Back.” She returned four years later with A Moment, followed by the much-lauded The Song Lives On, her duet album with Joe Sample in 1999, the same year she began growing her now-signature, cinnamon-hued ‘locs. By 2004, she’d deliver her fourth album, Outrun the Sky, garnering Hathaway her first number one single, the Rex Rideout-produced cover of Luther Vandross’ Forever, For Always, For Love, which was also featured on the critically-acclaimed Vandross tribute album of the same name.
Although she has created a space for herself, it’s not surprising that Hathaway remains connected to her late, great father and his classic sound. “I am his daughter,” she says, softly, “and that’s the truth of who I am, every day. When I was 15, and then, 20, I didn’t get why people were asking me how I felt about him and his music. But when I turned 25, I began to understand. Like my father, I want to leave a legacy of music that makes people really feel something, whether it be happiness, sadness, grief or heartache. I also want them to appreciate my humor which I know can be difficult to interpret in a song.”
In the meantime and between album projects, Hathaway – who’s recorded collaborations with Marcus Miller, Meshell Ndegéocello and Mary J. Blige, among them – keeps her creativity nourished by taking to the global stage and contributing her voice to Daughters of Soul, a musical mélange founded by comrade, Sandra St. Victor, and featuring Nona Hendryx, Joyce Kennedy as well as Indira and Simone, daughters of Chaka Khan and Nina Simone, respectively.
So, how does she hope her latest offering will be received?
“I don’t necessarily want to fit into what’s happening now,” she says of today’s marketplace, “but I want to stand with it, on my own thing. I would really love it if people need the record. I put a lot of myself into this album, so I hope people can hear me and understand who I am.”

Thug Life Army Records7336 Santa Monica Boulevard, Suite 800, Hollywood, California 90046
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Indie Hip Hop Label Re-Issues Unique Tupac Tribute Project
With all the talk about hip hop being dead, indie label Thug Life Army Records sets forth a project that proves hip hop is alive and well: outside the boundary of corporate boardroom hip hop.
In the Shadow of an Icon? is an amazing tribute to the teachings and thought process of hip hop icon; rapper, activist, poet Tupac Shakur (2Pac). Tupac connected with the street because he was from the street and understood the messages that the street needed to hear.
Artist from all across the country including California, New York, Georgia, Texas, St. Louis as well as Canada have contributed to this project set in the mindset of Tupac Shakur (2Pac).
In The Shadow of an Icon brings no bling, or spinning rims, no meaningless repetitive hooks - just good quality hip hop with a message from unsigned artists relevant to hip hop culture in a time when real thought provoking hip hop seems to have left the scene.
The project includes a track from San Antonio, Texas based 1223 whose track Wish I Knew" placed first in VH-1's International Songwriting Competition. Also included on this project is a track from Jasiri X with Franchise (Produced by Paradise Gray of X Clan). Jasiri X has won the awards for Best Inspirational Artist and Single of the Year for "FREE THE JENA 6" at the 2008 Pittsburgh Hip-Hop Awards among others this year.
Hip hop is alive and well and this compilation from newly formed indie label Thug Life Army Records proves that. Tracks from well known indie artist like Inglewood, California?s own Binky Mack (of the Westside Connection click) and Squeak Ru (Binky Macks partner in the group allfrumtha I), Bay Area Boss Celly Cel, Latino great Kemo tha Blaxican out of East LA, Detroit, Michigan?s Page 1, K?Loron from Cleveland, Ohio, Latino group UND from the legendary Inland Empire in California, G Luv (from Mack 10's Road Dawgz), Boo Kapone from Inglewood, California, Latino group Concrete Souljahs from Phoenix Arizona, Wize-Fool representing from the Bronx NY and Jersey, SUPe from Hawthorne, California, Saint Louis, Missouri based Hustle Creed, Inglewood, California?s Purple Lounge, from Chicago to LA and the entire One Nation Project Malign20, Ebony Burks from Atlanta Georgia / Los Angeles California, FAME from Atlanta, Georgia, Qwiccshott from San Diego, California, Nolan from Inglewood, California, Tommy Danger from Harlem and Manhattan, 3RDegree from the I.E. (Inland Empire), California, Dolo from Inglewood, California, and lets not forget our brothers from north of the border Sammy B and Big Dee from Calgary AB Canada and the spoken word artist Queen Josie from Atlanta, Georgia.
As you can see there is a wide area of the nation covered by these artists. The Reviews are enriching:
"This entire project is not just a true testament to the direct inspiration that Tupac provided many in our society, but also a reflection of positive hip hop culture being used as a voice for the voiceless." - Shamako Noble: President and Executive Director of The Hip Hop Congress ? http://www.hiphopcongress.com Hip Hop Congress.com
"The artists featured on this two-disc compilation have all been baptized at the altar of Tupac; they not only continue a mighty tradition, they take it to a higher level. All praise is due to ThugLifeArmy Records" - Dr. Uhuru Hotep / Kwame Ture Leadership Institute http://www.ktli.org KTI.Org
"In The Shadow of an Icon pays homage to the late, great Tupac Shakur. Thug Life Army Records compilation was done with taste and respect for Tupac's legacy." - Jonathan Wolfson / Wolfson Public Relations http://www.wolfson-pr.com Wolfson PR
?Maybe the "In the Shadow of an Icon" CD will help us, at least imagine if only for a moment, the possibilities of not only Tupac Shakur, but the legions of young men and women who would follow his lead, if they politicized their lyrics and connected them with the struggling masses... by "TRUTH Minista Paul Scott? of http://www.NoWarningShotsFired.com No Waring Shots Fried.com
"In the Shadow of an Icon is the rare album available today whose lyrical content, production and theme are all top-of-the line and in harmony. The spirit of 'Pac - his intellect, defiance, and love - lives in this album, with enough of a roster, message, and music to carry his great legacy for another generation" ? by Cedric Muhammad / Black Coffee Channel http://www.blackcoffeechannel.com Black Coffee Channel and Black Electorate.com http://www.blackelectorate.com Black Electorate.com
A really solid release... I really appreciate the purpose of the project. It's not your typical thugged-out music. It's street music, but with heart, and in that way, it does a great service to the memory of 'Pac. I was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the production, the lyrical skills of the MCs and variety of artists on the CD. Well done!?...by Greg Schick / Old School G - World Hip Hop Market http://www.worldhiphopmarket.com Hip Hop Market.com
Review from StreetHop by Rahim Judging a book by its cover never really helped anyone to begin with, and in my findings, this 29-track compilation CD is filled with up and down-beat tracks that anyone can easily be bopping their head to, not to mention that the whole vibe of the album can be described as something out of the vaults of Suge Knight's Death Row Records. The album also showcases a style of music that most 2Pac fans will recognize, while the music itself represents the same struggle in which 2Pac had fought hard for. There are a lot of talented artists on this album, and from the sound of it; I'm glad none of the artists give off too much of a mainstream feel to their music...
Hip hop is not dead, you just have to know where to look ? and that means look to the streets instead of the boardroom and you will see that Thug Life Army Records has done just that on In the Shadow of an Icon. "Hip Hop was supposed to be this new thing that had no boundaries and was so different to everyday music. As long as it has soul to it, hip hop can live on." - Tupac Shakur
The album is available for digital download on Itunes, Umusic and all other on line download sources. In stores nationwide. The album can also be purchased at TupacTribute.com or ThugLifeArmyRecords.com for a Special Re-Launch price.

Whose Law, Whose Justice?
Given the currently disparity in racial sentencing it does not surprise me that the federal prosecutors so fervently demanded that Wesley Snipes be given such a severe sentence for his complicity in tax evasion. I wonder how well those same zealous prosecutors would
sleep at night if they were to take into account the following report?
Dear Editors at The Arizona Daily Star and the Tucson Citizen,
In my native state of Maryland my sister fell prey to the mandatory crack sentences laws. By assisting her friend, a low level local apartment complex dealer, in his attempt to stash and flush his dope before the cops busted the door down; she received a mandatory ten year crack cocaine possession sentence of which she did eight years.
This was eight years that her young son (then only three) had to grow up separated from his mother and raised instead by his grandmother.
Now I am sure the corpse stashing couple involved in the article below didn't have the type of money and access that OJ had to buy himself off from a murder charge. So I am lead to wonder how and why.
After you have read the article I would hope that you good folks (especially those of you
who think that here in 2008 that everything is now so fair, just and just peachy clean) think must have contributed to them receiving such a light sentencing.
AND JUSTICE FOR ALL

Tucson Region Man gets probation for dumping body in shaft
By Kim Smith
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 04.01.2008
A former Arivaca resident was sentenced to three years' probation Monday for dumping his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend down a mine shaft after she shot him to death with an AK-47.
Tommie Joe Holliday, 54, pleaded guilty to attempted concealment or abandonment of a human body in the November 2005 death of Bobby Lee Gatlin, 46.
Holliday could have been sentenced to a maximum of two years in prison, but Pima County Superior Court Judge Hector Campoy placed him on probation.
Pima County Sheriff's deputies began hearing rumors in October 2006 that Gatlin had been murdered in November 2005 and thrown down a mine shaft, according to court documents.
On June 1, 2007, detectives found Gatlin's body 15 feet underground, wrapped in a tarp, blankets and sleeping bag.
An autopsy showed he'd been shot several times.
Stephanie Lynn Bartlett, 41, Holliday and Stacey Leigh Sharp were arrested when Bartlett and Sharp made incriminating statements.
Court documents indicate Bartlett was involved in an on-again, off-again relationship with Gatlin. For several years, they had been living in makeshift camps outside Arivaca with Bartlett 's three teenage sons and other homeless people.
Bartlett told authorities she killed Gatlin after he came after her with an ax and threatened to kill her and her children.
Holliday and Sharp, who is Bartlett 's sister, helped dump Gatlin's body in the mine shaft the next day.
Bartlett was sentenced to five years' probation and 365 days in jail in February after pleading guilty to manslaughter. She was given 248 days credit for the time she'd already served.
On Monday, Campoy told Holliday he is not to have contact with Bartlett once she is released without first getting permission from probation officers.
Sharp also pleaded guilty to attempted concealment or abandonment of a human body and is awaiting sentencing. Contact reporter Kim Smith at 573-4241 or kimsmith@azstarnet.com

Atco Records, an imprint of Rhino Entertainment, announces the May 13 release of JUST ME, the first new studio album from R&B legend Keith Sweat since his 2002 Rebirth set. The original "new jack" hitmaker, who celebrated 20 years as a chart artist at the end of 2007, produced and cowrote most of the material on his latest project which features guest artists Keyshia Cole, and Athena Cage (Keith's duet partner on the million-selling 1996 hit "Nobody").
The Harlem-born singer/songwriter and producer says he called his new album JUST ME "because I'm giving the people what they expect from me. You hear other artists out here who make the mistake of trying to be trendy. They really try to keep up. I know people want to hear Keith Sweat. I'm conscious of the people who have followed me the whole time, since day one. I remember that I have a fan base and I'm very careful to give the people what they expect from me."
The first single from Keith Sweat's JUST ME is the sexy jam "Suga Suga Suga," featuring Paisley Bettis. Standout cuts include the hypnotic "Somebody," which showcases Sweat singing falsetto for the first time; the future classic "Love You Better," a truly memorable duet between Keith and hitmaker Keyshia Cole; and "Just Wanna Sex You," a hit-the-spot cut that Keith says is on the album "to remind people of what I've done and what I'm about musically."

Geffen Records presents the sophomore release from Solange Knowles, SoL-AngeL and The Hadley Street Dreams due for release on August 26th. In anticipation for SolangeR17;s CD release on August 26th I have audio streams of the first single, “I Decided”, and other assets (press release and photos) below. Let me know if you are interested in featuring Solange on Black Refer.
Talented singer, songwriter, artist, and entrepreneur, Solange Knowles AKA SoL-AngeL, is ready to set the world on fire with a sound that is sure to breathe life into a sometimes stagnant music scene. With her sophomore set, SoL-AngeL and The Hadley Street Dreams, on her new label home of Geffen Records through Music World Entertainment, Solange takes us through a walk in yesteryear with an uber modern twist. SoL-AngeL and The Hadley Street Dreams is due for release on August 26th.
On SoL-AngeL and The Hadley Street Dreams, SoL-AngeL enlisted help from producers and songwriters that she knew would capture the sound she wanted to project instantly; but getting them to believe in her wasn’t easy.
R20;I literally had to beg Cee-Lo to listen to my music but once he did he signed on immediately,” states the giddy SoL-AngeL. “We wrote and recorded ‘T.O.N.YR17; and R16;Sandcastle Disco’ (produced by Soul Shock) that same week. Producer Jack ‘Splash’ joined in to produce ‘T.O.N.Y’ and went on to produce two more songs for me: R16;WouldR17;ve Been the OneR17; and ‘Ode To Marvin,’ my special take on Mr. Gaye’s ‘What’s going On,’ both of which I wrote with Splash and Makeba.”
For the remainder of the album SoL-AngeL went on to work with Pharrell for the finger-snapping, feel-good first single “I Decided,” Lil Wayne makes an intoxicated guest appearance on “Champagnechronicnightcap,R21; Bilal helps write and appears on “Cosmic Journey” and “Wanna Go Back,” which Marsha Ambrosius of Floetry lends vocals to, and Raphael Saddiq produces the soulfully insightful, “Same Song, Different Man,” which features Estelle.

His hat might as well be a crown because this young entrepreneur has no doubt carved himself a kingdom in Oklahoma with loyal followers and soldiers to prove it. Destined for greatness he took everything he had learned from hustling and turned a hungry eye towards the music industry and launched a full frontal attack never looking back.
In only 3 years Mike Smiley’s record label’s name “Presidential Trap House” is as well known and respected as the man who gave it the name. He stepped into the industry with only his knowledge of the hustle game and that of the street and simply applied it to this new game called the music business. It didn’t take long before he realized that this game was no different than the one he had been playing for the last 15 years. It was all about who you know and once you made the right connections you were in. So from that point on Smiley and the rest of the Trap House (Chop Chop, Chief, Mouse Meezy, Rocc Bottom, and Dj Grind daily) were hitting every party, music conference and award show that mattered in hip hop. Performing and helping sponsor events like the OZONE AWARDS which aired on MTV, THE CORE DJ RETREAT, and THE SOUTHERN ENTERTAINMENT AWARDS, among others. As if that wasn’t enough he jokingly bolsters the fact that he has more friends than any other CEO in the business on the popular social networking site MySpace. He truly is one of those rare CEO’s that has a star power and charisma of his own that fans are drawn to surpassing that of Damon Dash or any other CEO before him.
In early 2008 Smiley took the next big step and hired music video mogul Mr.Boomtown to create a ghetto masterpiece for his front running artist Chop Chop’s single “Red Durt” which will be airing on BET in the months to come. A success story from start to finish Mike Smiley not only survived in the world of the streets he thrived. The same is true for his journey and struggle in the music business. He has not only just made his way he has taken the game over and put it in a chokehold.

Hurry Hurry Hurry!!
Still time to Vote!!
Best post wins an all expenses paid trip to meet Spike Lee at next month’s Cannes Film Festival and a ticket to the first BOFF Awards Ceremony
BABELGUM ONLINE FILM FESTIVAL/News Update
Top rated films this week are from Italy, France, Norway and the USA
London, 22nd.April 2008 – Voting fever reigns at the first Babelgum Online Film Festival (BOFF) on Babelgum, the new interactive web TV portal. Over a thousand entries from 86 countries are available to anyone with broadband, reaching a potential global audience of 360 million.
The Babelgum Online Film Festival is the first of its kind, and provides a unique distribution opportunity for the newest filmmaking talent. A number of entries have been created specifically for the festival, proving that it is also generating new and original content.
Top Films of the week April 14/20: Get a grip on your life…..and enjoy!! That seems to be the message from this week’s most popular films in the Babelgum Online Film Festival, the first BOFF. We can allow ourselves a little more pleasure, be brave in the face of adversity, move onwards and upwards even after we’ve been rejected and have faith. We can make a difference too – either by crossing a border on a rocket or, on a serious note, looking for alternatives to oil. Sure, we can take it too far, but as the top of the music category shows, true friends will always forgive us our excesses.
The Judging Process:
· Babelgum users are now voting in their thousands and having their say on who will become the next big filmmaking talent. A shortlist of films will be reached through a combination of factors: users’ votes, the amount of times a film is viewed, the amount of posts and comments and the number of times a film is linked
· The shortlist will then be judged by the BOFF Jury, led by renowned director Spike Lee. The other jurors consist of film experts from across the globe, including the directors of established film festivals, film schools and film industry associations:
