On behalf of Barnholtz Entertainment, we are pleased to present The Lena Baker Story, coming to DVD August 31st!

FULL SYNOPSIS:
Based on true events, THE LENA BAKER STORY recounts one African-American womans struggle to rise above the challenges of her life, to face the choices she makes, and to ultimately triumph over her impossible circumstances.

As a young girl in the early 1900s Lena Baker (Tichina Arnold) and her mother (Beverly Todd) make ends meet by picking cotton in the hot southern sun of rural Cuthbert, Georgia. Lena grows up to work as a prostitute during the Roaring Twenties in an attempt to make enough money to head north and start anew. She is arrested before her dream is realized and sentenced to ten months of hard labor. Returning from this grueling experience and reuniting with her mother on the dusty road near their home, it is clear that Lena is changed forever.

Years later, it seems that Lena has finally overcome her inner demons. She has three young children, she no longer drinks, she attends church regularly and helps her mother with their weekly laundry work.

Just when it seems Lena may be able to forget the sorrow of her past, she is called to work for Elliot Arthur (Peter Coyote), a tyrannical white man known in Cuthbert for his angry disposition and drinking. Over time, Lena and Elliot develop a highly-charged relationship, filled with alcohol, cruelty and a troubling need for one another.

Elliots physical and mental abuse continues to escalate. He often kidnaps Lena from her home and imprisons her for weeks, keeping her from her children and mother. One particularly hot and humid night, Lena finally stands up for herself and attempts to break free from his bondage. A struggle ensues and the gun they tussle over accidentally goes off. Elliot Arthur, a white man, is shot by Lena Baker, an African-American woman. She is arrested soon after by the towns sympathetic sheriff (Michael Rooker) who is helpless in the face of social mores of the time.

The trial is swift and a jury of 12 white men, her subpoenaed peers, find Lena guilty of murder in less than six hours. Lena soon receives the devastating news that she has been sentenced to death by electrocution. During the coming months, Lena prepares for her passing with dignity and strength. In the end, she dies confident in the knowledge that God will judge her in a way that her fellow human beings could not.

Lena Baker was the first and only woman to be sentenced to death by the electric chair in the state of Georgia and was executed in 1945. She was pardoned posthumously in 2005.

Synopsis:
COUNTDOWN TO ZERO traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possess nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident. Written and directed by acclaimed documentarian Lucy Walker (Devil’s Playground, Blindsight), the film features an array of important international statesmen, including Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair. Countdown to Zero makes a compelling case for worldwide nuclear disarmament, an issue more topical than ever with the Obama administration working to revive this goal today. The film was produced by Academy Award® winner and 2009 nominee Lawrence Bender (Inglourious Basterds, An Inconvenient Truth) and developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media, together with World Security Institute.

Former Motown Artist, Val Young, Famed For Success With Snoop Dogg & 2Pac, To Release Solo Album After 23 Years

LOS ANGELES, June. 30 /2SPR/ - Legendary R&B/Soul singer-songwriter, Val Young, also known as "Lady V", is set to make an eagerly awaited return, with the release of a brand new album entitled, The Voice Beyond.

Currently, Val (original Mary Jane Band), and Candice "Candi" Ghant (original Mary Jane Girl), have the license to say and do the Mary Jane Girls. They are performing live, along with Rick James daughter Ty James, where they do a tribute to Rick as part of the show. Val has also been singing with Rufus (Tony Maiden and Kevin Murphy), and Sly Stone.

The Detroit, Michigan native, and former Motown recording artist began performing at an early age, singing background vocals for the likes of The Gap Band, George Clinton, and Roy Ayers. In the 1980's, late funk superstar Rick James was so impressed by her talent, and physical appearance, that he promoted her as the "Black Marilyn Monroe". Later signing her to Motown Records, where he helped produce her debut album Seduction ('85), which included the hits "Mind Games", "Piece Of My Heart", "If You Should Ever Be Lonely" and her second album Private Conversations ('87), that was released on Amherst Records. The album Seduction would go on to achieve gold status.

Today Val's walls are lined with numerous gold and platinum discs, in lieu of her many musical credits. One of her most memorable collaborations is the song "To Live & Die In L.A." by the late Tupac Shakur featuring Val Young, with whom she shared a very special working relationship.

As one of the most recognised voices in urban music, Val has worked with a long list of artists that include Bobby Womack, Kurtis Blow, Dr. Dre, Teena Marie, Deborah Cox, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Bobby Brown, Warren G, Nate Dogg, Keith Sweat, Eddie Griffin, and Eddie Murphy. In 2009, she was featured as a background singer for Raphael Saadiq, in his PBS televised concert Live From The Artists Den, and recent collaborations with Snoop Dogg and Mark Morrison, are due for release later this year.

The Voice Beyond is scheduled for release soon, and includes guest appearances from artists such as the Grammy-nominated rapper/actress, Yo-Yo.

Aaron Smith
"Love Stoned" mixtape coming soon!
Suretone Records

"I have a side project under my Real name Aaron Smith and a lot of people are asking “Why isn’t it Shwayze”?? Or “Is the group Done”?? First of all the group will NEVER BE DONE that’s how we started and we’ll alwayz be pumpin out Shwayze tunes for you to party to, so no worries there. 2nd I didn’t use the name Shwayze because I felt like this music is a bit different and I didn’t want to throw off the Shwayze fans, because we all know how ya’ll love your WEED and Women!... Somewhere along the journey I fell in love, which gave me a whole new motivation and inspiration. Love Stoned is a product of a lot of different emotions and overall I think its a growth for me as an individual... I defiantly stepped outside of my comfort zone and learned a lot of new things about myself... My advice to people after making this record is don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone because that’s when we challenge ourselves and that’s when we grow!"

Rich Mix to host award-winning Paul Robeson play

Call Mr. Robeson, an award-winning one-man play about the famous African American actor, singer and civil rights pioneer is to be performed at Rich Mix, Bethnal Green on Thursday to Saturday 29 to 31 July 2010. The play ends its current Spring/Summer tour of England and Northern Ireland with these Rich Mix dates before settling into a three-week residency at Edinburgh Fringe in August. Oliver Carruthers, Arts and Cultural Officer at Rich Mix said, “Rich Mix’s raison d’aitre is to showcase culture from and about BAME artists of the highest caliber, and from what we have heard of Call Mr. Robeson, this really is just such a piece – one which we are very proud and pleased to present to the people of London.”

Call Mr. Robeson is described as a roller coaster journey through Robeson’s remarkable and eventful life, and highlights how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. It features some of his famous songs and speeches, including a dramatic rendition of Ol’ Man River and a defiant testimony to the Senate House Un-American Activities Committee. It also deals with Robeson’s strong links with trade unions in America and Britain.

Aluko, who has performed the play all over the UK, the US, Canada and Nigeria, to people aged from 11 to 90 says, ‘I am very ambitious for this play, as Paul Robeson’s story needs to be told again and again. Rich Mix in London’s East End is an important stop on what I hope will be a great journey to the West End - where the play deserves to be - and beyond. I’m really looking forward to presenting it in this venue, and I really expect that the short run will be of great benefit both to Call Mr. Robeson and Rich Mix’s existing and new audiences’.

Accompanying Aluko on piano will be Leeds-based Jazz Pianist Michael Conliffe, who has also performed in another play, God Bless The Child about another Black music legend, Billie Holiday.

Reviews:
“I struggle desperately to find words that can truly express my feelings for this production and as such, I urge you, from somewhere within me that I haven't been in touch with for a long time, to go and experience it for yourself.” (5 Stars) Three Weeks Magazine
