Mixed Messages
by LaTonya Williams

A delightful tale of sisterhood!

Mixed Messages is a fast-paced story of friendship, love, lust, and betrayal. Kailah Carter is a young financial professional, inching her way up the corporate ladder at AND Consulting (a small firm in Chicago). Her best friend, Mona Richards (who has a career in law), is struggling with her anger over the fact that Kailah slept with her boyfriend, years earlier.

When Kailah meets, falls in love with, and marries Keith Terrence, she feels that life couldn’t be better. But, this happily-ever-after illusion is short-lived. Keith is imprisoned for illegal drug dealing and Kailah must raise their two children alone. Her mother, Mother Anna, travels from Gainesville, Florida, to Chicago (leaving her husband for a while), to be a help to her. A deeply spiritual woman, Kailah prays for strength to remain faithful to her husband, and she almost succeeds!

Meanwhile, Mona falls in love with Davis Simpson, a man with an overbearing ex-wife and two teen age daughters. At one point Keisha, one of the daughters, moves in with Mona and Davis. At 15, she becomes pregnant, belligerent, and totally disrespects Mona.

While Kailah worked her way through school she often felt that Mona’s life was too easy! At times Mona feels that Kailah is reckless and wild, yet they are sister-friends who for over ten years, have shared their triumphs and heartaches.

Valley Experiences That Build Character
by Cherie Harwell

Harwell first came on the literary scene with Dump It!, a cautionary guide to letting go of the things which hold one back. Her new offering, Valley Experiences That Build Character, talks of pain and teaches how to overcome it.

Harwell's husband, Dwight, wrote the portion which speaks of how God delivered him from his crack cocaine addiction, by placing Psalms 102, on his heart. Harwell explains that although the "valley" is a low place, with the help of the Lord, people have the power to be lifted up. She shares the wisdom of King Solomon when she says, "Solomon explains this best in Proverbs, saying that in the valley you live beneath your potential, that building your character and good name is more valuable than rubies."

Valley Experiences That Build Character draws on references from Old as well as, New Testament scriptures. There are instructions on what to do when you're in the valley, how to prosper in the valley, and how to get out of the valley,

With spiritual events, Harwell covers the five valleys; Gilgad, where the Israelites faced the first challenge; Bethel, the valley of trouble; Jericho, "with winding double walls"; Jordan, "which represents the crossing point in your life"; and Gilead, a place of asylum and shelter.

Some of the everyday valley experiences include: high divorce rates resulting in the destruction of the family unit, and single parenting. Harwell says of the latter "It's not fun, but neither is it impossible."

Harwell has left nothing to chance--the book even has a handy lexicon in the back!

Air Rage
By Sam Yarney

Yarney spawns an engrossing tale of international suspense which visits China, Europe, and even the United States. Zigzagging the globe is British journalist, Cyrus Anderson, who interviews the president of the United States; then flies to the Bahamas to investigate the death of an acquaintance.

There are sinister dealings between high-ranking world politicians. China has a desire to become the most dominant force in the world, and is involved in an economic war, with Europe and the United States being major players. At stake is Shanghai 1000, a project associated with the Chinese government, with the aid of bankers in Wall Street, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Whichever country lands Shanghai 1000 will gain thousands of jobs and over $100 billion dollars! This brings out unscrupulous bankers, anxious politicians, and money-hungry salesmen.

At the heart of a controversy is PDR (Pour Down Righteousness) a Christian television network. PDR, which cranks out Christian programming 24 hours a day, is under attack. Cyrus Anderson is soon involved despite Libby's (his wife) objections. His father-in-law has been killed, his marriage is threatened, but Cyrus is in a race against time to save PDR, and squash all hopes of the Shanghai 1000 project landing in the wrong hands.

This enthralling book is filled with religious nuances as world powers struggle to control the airwaves.

A Black Butterfly
Written by Ms. Lea' Marie

Lea' Marie tells a very compelling story in Black Butterfly. It is her own life, from a childhood of abuse and shame to her journey of acceptance of who she is. A product of a single-parent home (her father spent 26 years in prison), she has no positive male role models. An obese child, she is tormented by her brothers, as she battles to fit in.

She is raped in her own home, by one of her brother's friends. After the rapist brags about the incident, another man rapes her. Too ashamed to report the abuse, she tries to hide it, while at the same time holding on to her sanity.

Lea' Marie baby-sits neighborhood children, and uses the money to buy gifts for her grandmother, and clothes for herself. She feels good about herself; but she loses the job when her brother is accused of molesting the girls in her care.

One bright spot in Lea' Marie's life is the time she spends with her grandmother. Always the favorite grandchild, she feels secure and loved when she's with Virginia Gardner, whom she also calls her best friend. When Virginia dies, Lea' Marie is devasted, but she moves on.

Although Lea' Marie's pain leaps through every page, we also see her love of music as she shines during her high school talent show! And, her life really becomes an open book, as she discusses her gay lifestyle.
