Love Don't Live Here
by Therone Shellman

In his debut novel, set in Brooklyn, New York, Shellman introduces the reader to two twenty-something black ladies, Barbara and Beverly. The heroine, Barbara Jackson, is abandoned by her live-in boyfriend, Trini, when she is six months pregnant. She is struggling to raise her son Jermaine, alone although she does have a strong network of family and friends.

Barbara spends some time with her Aunt Esther and Uncle Johnson until she has the baby and is back on her feet. Her aunt and uncle raised her after her father killed her mother then killed himself, when Barbara was a young child.

Beverly is also a single mother raising her son, Derrick and daughter, Tinesha. Her boyfriend, Malik, a member of the Black Panther Party, was killed by the police during a bank robbery. Both women are aware of the difficulties associated with raising a black male child without a positive role model.

The two ladies forge a friendship and in fact become a support system for one another. When Barbara's drug-dealing husband, Joe-Joe is killed, Beverly is there for her. And, when their sons become wild and unruly during their teen years, the friends turn to each other for advice, love and support.

A delightful tale!
