The zoo can be a fun place for a date. Its almost impossible to have a bad time at the zoo, or feel pressure around so many cute and cuddly animals. A person's favorite animal can tell a lot about them. Someone who likes lions and tigers may have a more aggressive personality than one who likes the antelope or the flamingo. However this is simply an assumption, as I am no psychologist.
The zoo can also be a place where people can bond very well, because there is a lot of talking and decision-making taking place. You and your date will share opinions and ideas, and have plenty of time to make good conversation. You may even find an animal that resembles your date, and that may or may not make for good conversation as well.
Although some reptiles are likable, if your date tends to want to hang around the snake cage all day, I would take precaution and watch them closely. I tend to like the aquatic animals, the elephants, the cats, the bears and the birds the most, though I am partial to the apes as well. The apes can be moody. Sometimes they want to socialize and other times they just sit and stare. Many people are that way, they don't like to move around much, just sit and watch the world go by. If you are a person who likes to stay active, and you like to have fun and be adventurous, but your date likes to just sit and stare like the apes, you would be able to pick that up quickly as well, at the zoo.

Overall, a day at the zoo with a person of interest is an excellent way to get to know that person. At the San Antonio Zoo, for instance, there is an amazing exhibit of exotic African animals. People can go on an African safari without leaving the city! Its also a great way to incorporate children on a date if you do have kids, and can't find a babysitter. Also, going to the zoo is a great way to reveal your more natural side. Women are discouraged to cake on makeup or wear high heels, and men are discouraged from wearing too much cologne. So, pack a lunch and your date of choice, and go see those monkeys!
