This Marks the Fifth Movie Produced from Winning Scripts in the UP Faith & Family Screenplay Competition at ABFF

    MY OTHER MOTHER

ATLANTA – August 19, 2014 – UP presents the UP Original Movie My Other Mother, an emotional, heartwarming drama about a demanding national TV news anchor who reconnects with her equally-demanding birth mother. Starring Essence Atkins (Haunted House 2, "Half & Half"), Lynn Whitfield (The Josephine Baker Story, UP’s The Dempsey Sisters and Somebody’s Child) and Jasmine Guy (“The Vampire Diaries,” “A Different World”), My Other Mother will make its world television premiere on UP on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at 7 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. PDT.

Produced by Swirl Films, the film is directed by Stan Foster (Peacher’s Kid, “Tour of Duty”). The ensemble cast also includes GregAlan Williams (UP’s Marry Me For Christmas and Somebody’s Child, “Necessary Roughness”), Angie Stone (UP’s Where’s The Love?, “The Rickey Smiley Show”) and Kendrick Cross (Iron Man 3, “The Game”).

My Other Mother, marks the fifth film to be produced and air on UP as a direct result of the network’s highly successful “UP Faith & Family Screenplay Competition,” now in its fourth year. The script is by Keronda “KiKi” McKnight, the Winner in last year’s UP Faith & Family Screenplay Competition at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF).

In My Other Mother, Candace “Candy” Meyers (Essence Atkins) is a successful anchor on a top-rated national magazine show. Fiercely independent and committed to her job, Candy doesn’t make many friends with her demanding, gruff nature. In fact, her only true friend might be her long-time manager Lewis (Kendrick Cross). Candy discovers that an anonymous fan she’s had for years has passed way – and he was her biological father Freddy Nelson! Content with the love and support of her adoptive family, Candy has never been curious about her biological parents. That all changes when she travels back for her father’s funeral, meets the Nelson family – including biological uncle Abner (GregAlan Williams), Freddy’s wife Delores (Angie Stone) and her two step-brothers – and discovers that her reclusive, angry and stubborn birth mother, Mary Jo (Lynn Whitfield) is going to be a challenge. The journey these two surprisingly similar women take getting to know each other will break down walls and open them up to a life they never knew was possible.

“We are thrilled to bring Keronda ‘KiKi’ McKnight’s impressive, winning script to life on UP as part of our ongoing commitment to the UP Faith & Family Screenplay Competition at ABFF,” said Sophia Kelley, senior vice president of programming, UP. “Viewers are going to enjoy seeing our outstanding leads – NAACP Image Award-winning Essence Atkins, Emmy® Award-winning Lynn Whitfield and NAACP Image Award-winning Jasmine Guy – acting toe-to-toe as daughter Candy, birth mother Mary Jo and adoptive mother Evelyn.”

For the fourth year, UP has partnered with the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) on its annual UP Faith and Family Screenplay Competition. The Competition, developed to promote the development of faith-friendly, family entertainment screenplays, with a focus on the American Black experience, is a component of UP’s Official Sponsorship of Film Life’s annual ABFF, which is the preeminent festival promoting cultural diversity within the film and television industry.

To date, the UP Faith & Family Competition has generated four films that UP has produced and aired on the network. These include In the Meantime, written by Nzinga Kadalie Kemp, and Raising Izzie, written by David Martyn Conley – both produced by Roger Bobb of Bobbcat Films. The third film is Somebody’s Child, written by Siddeeqah Powell and directed by Gary Wheeler. Raising Izzie and Somebody’s Child were the number one and number two ranked telecasts in their time slots among African-American W18-49 on their premiere nights. The fourth film, Comeback Dad, had its world premiere on UP in July.

UP presents My Other Mother, a Swirl Films production. Starring Essence Atkins, Lynn Whitfield, Jasmine Guy, Greg Alan Williams, Angie Stone and Kendrick Cross. Directed by Stan Foster. Produced by Eric Tomosunas, David Eubanks and Keith Neal. Director of Photography is George Su. Editor is Dante Wyatt. Script by Keronda ‘KiKi’ McKnight.

The New York Times Magazine Q&A – Idris Elba, No Stringers Attached

The actor talks about embracing his sinister side, coming to America and clubbing in Ibiza.

    Q&A:

I read that you enjoyed playing your role in “No Good Deed” — this psychotic guy who tortures a family.
Yeah, I have to be careful saying I enjoyed it. Here’s the thing: I just don’t get to play characters like that very often, so it was a nice change for me to play someone that twisted.

Last year, you portrayed Nelson Mandela in a movie based on his autobiography, “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” I heard he gave the film and your portrayal his seal of approval.
He was very excited by it. He saw a little bit of it before he died. I mean, he’s seen himself in films played by different actors, but this film was entirely dedicated to his life story, and he was fascinated by the detail. He was quite close to the project even though he was very ill.

    Did you ever meet him?
No. I don’t regret much, but that’s one thing I do regret.

Since “The Wire” ended in 2008, have you made a conscious decision to avoid playing gangsters like Stringer Bell?
What kind of role do you play after someone like Stringer, you know what I mean? You play another gangster. What’s the point of that? I’ve played the gangster. I try to keep it really varied; it just makes for more of a fun and interesting career.

By now, there’s a whole younger generation that doesn’t know you as Stringer Bell. That must be satisfying. That’s true actually, yeah. The real young generation knows me from movies like “Pacific Rim.” They’ll tell me: “My dad says he knows you from ‘Stringer.’ I’ve never seen that show, but I think you’re awesome in it.”

You moved to New York early in your career because you thought there was a glass ceiling for black actors in Britain. Do you still think that’s the case?
Even when I went to America I didn’t work for four years. It wasn’t like I came to New York and it was the land of milk and honey. It was just as much of a hard graft. But there’s a lot more opportunity nowadays across the board for actors, no matter what color you are, with the Internet and small productions.

You and a group of British actors wrote an open letter to the BBC and other British broadcasters, arguing that they should better represent minorities. How have they reacted?
Especially in the television industry, people know this is something of an issue. Television companies have responded in a way that seems positive. Look, you know, it’s not a law or anything — we just decided to stand up and say: “Hey, try to get more diversity on our screen in England because it’s important to the culture and the culture is very diverse. Let’s see it on TV.”

You worked the night shift at a Ford factory in Britain before you got your break in acting. Do you think it’s good for actors to have some gritty work experience to draw from?
I find that a lot of actors who are good and open to challenges have lived a full life. When you walk into an audition, you have more to say for yourself because you come from the real world. It’s more enticing for directors, I think.

You also worked as a club D.J. Are you still doing that?
I’m coming toward the end of another season in Ibiza. I’ve been recording my shows from Ibiza and putting them on Capital FM, which has been a massive thing for me. Capital is a big radio station in London. Next year I’m going to start putting out some music as a D.J., which is a natural step, and just have as much fun as I can with it.

Recently, a picture of your crotch went viral. What was that like?
Initially it was on every entertainment channel in America. It was all over the Internet, it was trending, it was nuts. Really? Who cares? It was a mike wire.

Maybe you and Jon Hamm can form a support group.
Jon was pretty pissed that people stared at his crotch, and I can see his point, but it didn’t do me no harm. Let’s put it that way. It was kind of funny.

A lot of people say you’re their best hope for a black James Bond. Will that happen?
    Again, another flattering rumor.

(BPRW) New Web Series "Griot’s Lament" Honors the King of Pop’s Legacy by Premiering Part II of their Web-Series on Michael Jackson’s Birthday, 8/29/14

     Griot’s Lament

(BLACK PR WIRE) – “GRIOT’S LAMENT" applies Michael Jackson’s lyrics to the artist’s ongoing exploration of metamorphosis as a threshold of change, and as medium for identifying political and social injustices. "An innocent eighteen year old black man was killed, and we are that injustice," sang Michael alongside his sister Janet in the song SCREAM. I use "recontexualization" of these lyrics to revisit the killings of Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant, Mike Brown, and the countless number of innocent youths that have fallen prey to violence in Southwest Chicago.

"They don’t care about us" was shouted as a veiled response to the Rodney King beating, but could it have also been a foretelling or foreshadowing of the tragic humanitarian failures incurred during Hurricane Katrina? One violent scene in the film will be staged to replicate the horrific Rodney King beating. The film asks the question, as Michael did repeatedly via his music: How culpable are WE... when society cannot fully function in the realm of justice?

The character "Griot" is the conduit for Michael’s often overlooked and under recognized political orientation, a perspective that is often over shadowed by the glow and power of his popular music and larger than life persona. "Griot", pictured here and played by actor Brandon Hirsch, is a one man Greek chorus; "A broken ear witness to unspeakable crimes."

Thousands Accuse Ridley Scott of Racist Casting in New Petition

Care2 Activists Outraged Over Racist Casting in Ridley Scott’s New Film, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Urge Sensitivity in the Future

    http://www.thepetitionsite.com/664/448/866/tell-ridley-scott-to-stop-racist-casting/?z00m=21437422

CALIFORNIA — The casting of Ridley Scott’s new film Exodus: Gods and Kings has left thousands outraged over what they see as racist casting. The film tells the story of the Biblical Moses, yet all the Egyptian main characters are played by white actors, and nearly all of the film’s Egyptian villains and servants are played by black actors. A Care2 petition urges Scott to be accurate and racially sensitive when casting for future films; it has over 15,000 signatures.

    VIEW THE PETITION HERE: http://www.care2.com/go/z/RScott

The Care2 petition argues Exodus: Gods and Kings, which will be released this December, is neglectful of the race of biblical African and Middle Eastern characters. It portrays a false message that these figures were in fact Caucasian, while black actors are reserved for more minor roles.

“In his new version of Moses' battle to save his people from slavery, Scott has played into the worst, most outdated assumptions that the heroes of Judaism and Christianity were Caucasian,” the Care2 petition reads.

The IMBD cast list shows a stark contrast between the main and supporting actors. It includes Christian Bale as Moses, Aaron Paul as Joshua, and Sigourney Weaver as Tuya. By contrast, it features Adrian Palmer as “Egyptian thief,” David Olawale Ayinde as an uncredited “Egyptian Civilian Lower Class,” and Emeka Sesay as “Rhamses Royal Servant.”

Activists say casting black male actors as villains shamelessly reinforces racial stereotypes and sends a harmful message to viewers.

The Care2 petition echoes past efforts by Care2 members to raise awareness of racial inconsistencies in Hollywood casting. In March, after it was announced Rooney Mara would play Tiger Lily (a Native American character) in an adaptation of Peter Pan, a Care2 petition demanding Warner Bros. stop casting white actors to play people of color gathered more than 22,000 signatures.

Care2 (www.Care2.com) is a community of 25 million standing together for good. People are making world-changing impact with Care2, starting petitions and supporting each other’s campaigns to help individuals, animals and the environment. A pioneer of online advocacy since 1998, Care2 is a B Corporation, or social enterprise, using the power of business as a force for good.

“WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE” PREMIERES MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2014 WITH MULTI-TALENTED NEW HOST TERRY CREWS AT THE HELM

Crews Infuses the Long-Running Franchise with His High-Energy Personality and Contagious Enthusiasm Exciting New Lifeline and Two New Mini-Games are Incorporated into Iconic Game Play

(Burbank, CA, August 18, 2014) – Actor, author, fitness enthusiast, Old Spice pitchman and former NFL player Terry Crews (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “The Expendables 3”) will make his debut as the new host of the nationally-syndicated version of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” when the iconic game show launches its 13th season in national syndication on Monday, September 8, 2014. Crews will infuse his contagious enthusiasm, larger-than-life personality and boundless energy into the long-running franchise as each contestant sets out to win $1 million. Go to MillionaireTV.com for time and channel.

    TERRY CREWS

As America’s richest game show, “Millionaire” continues to be the only show to offer a $1 million prize to each and every contestant. Since “Millionaire” debuted in syndication in 2002, contestants have won nearly $90 million. The show features contestants from all over the country and all walks of life, and remains a game in which anyone can win big. Featuring cleverly-written trivia questions that reveal fun and entertaining facts, the game offers a playful learning experience combined with dramatic suspense that keeps contestants and viewers alike on the edge of their seats.

This season will see the debut of a new lifeline called “Plus One,” in which the contestant’s companion seated in the audience can be asked by the contestant to come down to the stage and help answer the question at hand. This lifeline marks the first time that companions have the opportunity to join in the game and help out his or her contestant by talking through and hopefully answering the answer correctly together.

The popular “Thousandaire” game, in which an audience member comes on stage to answer one question for $1,000, returns this season, and it's now joined by two new mini-games -- “Fastest Feet” and “Team Millionaire” -- giving the audience even more ways to win! “Fastest Feet” harkens back to primetime “Millionaire’s” “Fastest Finger” game; it’s a challenge in which four audience members are given themed cards and are tasked with physically putting them into the right order to split a $1,000 prize. And “Team Millionaire” partners two audience members with each other to win up to $1,000.

HOW TO PLAY “WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE”
In every show, contestants on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” are given the extraordinary chance to win life-changing money by answering 14 entertaining pop culture and general knowledge trivia questions.

Contestants are given three lifelines in case they need help or get stuck on a question with the goal of reaching the top prize on the show -- “Ask the Audience” (the contestant polls the audience to get their opinion on the correct answer to a question); “Jump the Question” (the contestant can skip or “jump” a question, but forfeits the money attached to the question); and the new “Plus One” lifeline.

The game is divided into two rounds. In the first round (questions 1-10), questions are shuffled and the monetary values behind the questions are randomized and hidden. Contestants do not find out the monetary value of each question until after they correctly answer it. With dollar values ranging from $100 to $25,000 in the first round, contestants can answer an easy question and be rewarded as much as $25,000, while a relatively hard question might only land them $100. Money earned from each correct answer is added to the contestant’s “Millionaire Bank.” Contestants who walk away from the game in the first round are able to take home half of their accumulated Millionaire Bank. Contestants leave with $1,000 if they answer incorrectly on a question at any point in the first round of the game.

In the second round (questions 11 – 14), contestants play “Classic Millionaire,” with only four questions remaining – valued at $100,000, $250,000, $500,000 and finally, $1 million. In “Classic Millionaire,” the questions get progressively harder. If a contestant walks away from the game in the second round, he or she is able to take home their entire accumulated Millionaire Bank. Even if the contestant answers incorrectly during the second round, they will still walk away with $25,000 in winnings.

AFFIRM FILMS TO RELEASE THE REMAINING IN THEATERS SEPTEMBER 5, 2014

CASEY LA SCALA DIRECTS THE SUPERNATURAL THRILLER

Releasing in theaters on September 5, 2014, The Remaining is an action-packed, supernatural thriller based on biblical accounts of the end times, in the aftermath of the Rapture. As a close-knit group of friends are celebrating a wedding, a series of catastrophic events turns the party into a life-and-death struggle. The young group desperately scrambles for refuge and self-preservation while a horrifying enemy unleashes its wrath against those remaining. They must figure out what is happening around them, and find a way to survive together in a terrifying new world of death and destruction.

     The Remaining movie

Directed by Casey La Scala and written by La Scala and Chris Dowling, the film stars Alexa Vega (Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D), Shaun Sipos (Texas Chainsaw 3D, TV’s “The Vampire Diaries”), Johnny Pacar (Flight 29 Down), Italia Ricci (TVs “Chasing Life”), Bryan Dechart (Step Up 3D) and newcomer Liz E. Morgan. The Remaining is produced by Brad Luff (Urban Legends), Marc Bienstock (Quarantine 2: Terminal) and La Scala. Rounding out La Scala’s team are cinematographer Doug Emmett (Paranormal Activity 4), production designer Brian Stultz (Iron Man 3) and editor Paul Covington (30 Days of Night).

Director Casey La Scala describes events that led him to write the script, “A couple of things happened at the same time. When my father passed a lot of things ran through my mind. One being to love the one you’re with before it’s too late, because things could end in the blink of an eye. When I had begun writingAmityville, I thought about what it would look like to have global paranormal activity. The same thoughts occurred when I was involved with the production of A Walk to Remember. Writer Nicholas Sparks has a faith-based, very family-oriented voice, which led to me think, what if I put the two ideas together? I wanted to create a story that would capture the imagination of everyone, mainstream and faith-based audiences. The Remaining captures both by centering on the extreme and horrific circumstances surrounding the biblical accounts of the end times. When the audience sees the movie they will feel like they are there.”

     The Remaining movie

Producer Brad Luff adds, “The Remaining is a compelling story that is meant to entertain a broad audience while also connecting strongly with those seeking spiritually-rich content.” In order for the filmmakers to ensure the film would seamlessly speak to faith-based audiences while appealing to the mainstream, they took the script to several pastors and youth leaders around the country for their critique and input.

Early response to the film amongst Christians has been very positive. "There are few movies that provide an opportunity for evangelism, where a youth pastor can do an altar call as the credits roll. The Remainingis that movie, an important message and outreach opportunity for churches,” according to Lifeway Films’ General Manager Scott Mills.

Adds AFFIRM Films Senior VP Rich Peluso, “The Remaining is a ground-breaking venture for AFFIRM Films, exploring the thriller/horror genre to bring to life a character-driven end-of-days story that is a glimpse of what life might be like as the world we know comes to an end. The filmmakers and cast built and delivered excellent characters that pull the audience into the human journey in the midst of supernatural events.”

Alexa Vega is cast in the leading role of Skylar, the bride who is from a very religious family and, surrounded by turmoil, comes to the realization of what being a Christian is truly about. “I think it’s an incredibly beautiful story . . . Even though her family is extremely religious, she practices but was not necessarily a believer. It was amazing to play this girl that makes this transition and finds herself and her faith despite the things going on around her,” she states.

     The Remaining movie

Tyndale House Publishers will be partnering with Sony in the publication of The Remaining, a novelization by critically acclaimed novelist Travis Thrasher that will release in September 2014. Readers can get a sneak peek by downloading the free e-book prologue, The Foreboding, in August (www.tyndale.com). Kingstone Comics brings top horror artist Kyle Hotz to the graphic novel adaptation of The Remaining, which is set for a mid-August release on ComiXology, at retail and on all digital platforms. Kingstone is the largest publisher of Christian comic books and Biblical worldview graphic novels worldwide, sold and distributed in 95 countries.

The Remaining is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of terror, violence and destruction throughout, and thematic elements. Running time is 87 min.

SEE WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE REMAINING:
“There has never been a more critical time for the soul of a human being than the times we are facing. This film forces one to ask determinative questions about faith and eternity, life and everlasting life, relationship and religion. The Remaining is a life-changing movie that will literally jolt you into the reality of Heaven vs. Hell.” - Bishop Neil C Ellis

“The Remaining dives, unapologetically, into the tough question: When the world reaches it's end, will I remain? In a powerful and sterilizing way, it scares you into the realization that we all have a choice. What choice have I made? How can I influence the right choice? It is an incredible movie that will change lives across the world.” - Bishop George Bloomer

“The Remaining is an epic contemporary dramatization of apocalyptic events. Its compelling realism thrusts the audience into an involuntarily self-examination and reassessment of personal life priorities. Movies are created to entertain you, this one will challenge or change you!” - Dr. Leonard N. Smith, Senior Minister, Mount Zion Baptist Church of Arlington, VA, and Chancellor of Richmond Virginia Seminary, Richmond, VA

(BPRW) Award Winning Director Alex Munoz’s “Griot’s Lament” Uses Michael Jackson’s Song Lyrics as Dialogue

Released on the fifth year anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death, Griot’s Lament has surpassed 500,000 views in two weeks

    Griot’s Lament

(BLACK PR WIRE) –“GRIOT’S LAMENT" applies Michael Jackson’s lyrics to the artist’s ongoing exploration of metamorphosis as a threshold of change, and as medium for identifying political and social injustices. "An innocent black man was killed, and we are that injustice," sang Michael alongside his sister Janet in the song SCREAM. I use "recontexualization" of these lyrics to revisit the killings of Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant, and the countless number of innocent youths that have fallen prey to violence in Southwest Chicago.

I am blessed and grateful to have an amazing crew and unbelievably talented cast whose creative currency will super charge every pixel of every single frame. As a team of artists, we are especially excited about hiring (with the help of our partners) local youth from Inglewood and South Central Los Angeles to work on the film, so that they can benefit from the experience of participating in a local professional film production.

Formerly incarcerated youth from my non profit FYI FILMS Films by Youth Inside, which empowers incarcerated youth via story telling and digital film making, worked as both talent and crew. I began writing Griot’s Lament the night that Michael left us. In my heart, it is my sincere hope that Griot’s Lament is a fitting tribute to the King of Pop, whose music is the soundtrack to much of my life.

KILL THE MESSENGER hits theaters on OCTOBER 10th, 2014!

     KILL THE MESSENGER

Story: Two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Bourne Legacy”) leads an all-star cast in a dramatic thriller based on the remarkable true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb. Despite warnings from drug kingpins and CIA operatives to stop his investigation, Webb keeps digging to uncover a conspiracy with explosive implications.
