Tyler James Williams: "Not All Of Us Are This Hip Hop Stereotype Of What's Portrayed"

    Tyler James Williams

‘Dear White People’ star Tyler James Williams stopped by the Dish Nation studio in Atlanta to talk about his new comedy, what he has in common with Eddie Murphy, and his thoughts on actress Raven-Symone’s controversial comments to Oprah Winfrey.

“‘Dear White People’ is about four black comic students in an Ivy League school who are dealing with identity issues of, what does it mean to be black in 2014,” Williams explained.

“We’re dealing with this new situation in America where we’ve never been before. There’s a black president, so there’s conversation about if race is still an issue, and of course it’s still an issue, but in what ways and what shapes of identity are there, and it talks a lot about that.”

Here’s what Williams wishes white people knew about black people:

“Not all of us are this hip hop stereotype of what’s portrayed. It kind of gets brought up in the film…I don’t just listen to hip hop. I am into Robert Altman movies and I do appreciate Mumford and Sons. We’re not all one thing! We’re different. There is diversity,” the 22-year-old actor said.

“Especially portrayed in the media and all of that, that we all have to be this one kind of thing and that’s just stereotypes and when people get hurt.”

Someone who recently tried to distance herself from that stereotype was former “The Cosby Show” actress Raven-Symone, who got a lot of heat from saying she’s not African American, just American, so Williams explained what he thinks she meant by it.

“I don’t know why everybody freaked out about that. I really don’t get it. When I think about, ‘Who am I?’ It’s not the top of my list do I go, ‘black.’ Obviously yes, that’s who I am, these are my people and this is my heritage, but who I am as a person doesn’t necessarily boil down to what my genetic makeup is,” he said.

“I think everybody thought that she was trying to say she just wasn’t black, or didn’t want to be, or didn’t want to be associated…I don’t think that’s what she was saying. I think she was saying I’m an individual outside of what came together to make me genetically.”

And genetically, the general public seems to think Williams looks like actor Orlando Jones and Beyonce’s sister, Solange!

“I am not the biological child of Orlando,” he joked. “I am not Solange, I don’t fight that well,” he laughed, poking fun at the elevator surveillance footage in which Solange physically attacked Bey’s husband, Jay-Z.

“I get that quite a bit,” he admitted though of being compared to comedian Eddie Murphy. “Especially because not many people know but when I did ‘Chris’ most of my studying was ‘Delirious’ and ‘Raw’ of Eddie’s… When I was auditioning for colleges for drama school…was his whole bit from ‘Delirious’ at the BBQ, I’m playing five different people.”

But what about Murphy’s famous laugh?

“I can’t do the laugh! It’s so specific and I hate doing a bad version of it. I would like to get it down first,” Williams said. “I’ve been working on it for years and when I do, I will come back and I’ll do it.”

Williams made his mark starring as Chris for five years on ‘Everybody Hates Chris’ and says the cast remains like family to him.

“Whenever you’ve had a moment in time, and these special moments in time with a group of people, there’s a certain feeling you get when you’re around those people,” he said.

“When we see each other it’s like family. We have these moments that click. We’re family with each other. But the good thing is we’re all busy, so we can’t see each other a lot.”

As for rumors circulating that he and actress Tessa Thompson are an item, Williams said, “No. I love Tessa. Tessa’s somebody I’ve wanted to work with forever, and we’re really close and we’re good friends, but no. Absolutely not,” he dished.

“I can officially confirm, there’s nothing.”

‘Dear White People’ is scheduled for limited release on Oct. 17, and will be released nation-wide on Oct. 24.

Nick Cannon Says ‘The Wound Is Too Fresh’ On Split With Mariah Carey

Nick Cannon Says ‘The Wound Is Too Fresh’ On Split With Mariah Carey

Nick Cannon talked with the Rickey Smiley Morning Show on Tuesday in Atlanta to dish about his recent split with wife Mariah Carey, his hit show ‘Real Husbands of Hollywood’ and rumors about an upcoming Richard Pryor biopic — and showed love to Dish Nation saying, “I’m a fan!” Just a month and a half after publicly confirming his separation from Carey, Cannon says he no plans to move on in another relationship any time soon.

“I think the wound’s too fresh to even be thinking about that right now,” he told Dish Nation’s Rickey Smiley.

“That’s someone that I’m managing,” Cannon said of Amber Rose, the model and recording artist he was romantically linked to in reports in the wake of his split from Carey.

“I’m really excited about everything she’s about to do in her career and building her brand. I manage a lot of people, but obviously that’s one, because she’s in the news as well and kind of a public figure, people just kind of latched onto that as the media does at times.”

Reports swirled in August that Cannon lost the lead role in an upcoming biopic on Richard Pryor to actor Mike Epps, but he claims the movie isn’t even a go yet.

“This is how this game goes. That’s a project that’s been around for decades and honestly, it’s still not even green-lit at this point,” he said.

In August, ‘The Butler’ director Lee Daniels posted a photo on social media with himself, Oprah Winfrey and Epps with the caption, “And we’re off… Get ready y’all for #richardpryor @eppsie @oprah,” but Cannon claims Daniels hasn’t officially signed onto the project yet.

“It’s certain names and certain people, if a person is gonna do it, it kind of fast tracks the project but now it’s kind of at a stalemate because even Lee Daniels hasn’t even really decided if he’s going to direct it yet.”

Cannon stays busy though with a third season of ‘Real Husbands of Hollywood’ in the works and Season 10 auditions gearing up for ‘America’s Got Talent.’

“You’re gonna see, the storylines are ridiculous. This season I’m running for the Mayor of Beverly Hills, so you’re gonna see a little bit of that,” he dished on BET’s ‘Real Husbands of Hollywood.’

“You gonna see Kevin try to kill me this season, so it’s gonna get crazy.”

Also crazy is the camaraderie Cannon says he has with the ‘AGT’ judges. Just don’t ask him to save one on a sinking ship!

“That’s a tough one. It’s gonna be somewhere between Howard Stern and Heidi Klum. I’d save Howard just for his legacy, because he’s probably the one that’s probably gonna be the most entertaining to me,” Cannon said.

“But then Heidi, you gotta save a woman! Just in case it all goes down, you gotta make sure you have somebody you can spend some quality time with!”

It’s been 12 years since one of Cannon’s most famous projects ‘Drumline’ came out and the father-of-two is now producing a followup to the flick — and he’ll be making a cameo.

“One thing when I started producing this project, and I wanted to bring it to television, I didn’t want to focus on my old storyline…I can’t come back and just still be drumming, so I wanted to focus on a new storyline and I focused on a female storyline, and wanted it to be about woman empowerment in the sense where it’s about a young lady trying to join the line,” Cannon said.

“I come back just for a quick cameo… My character Devon [Miles] kinda turns into a super music producer type of guy that comes back and pays respect for a couple of scenes.”

For more with Cannon, head over to The Rickey Smiley Morning Show.

    YOU’RE NOT YOU

Release Date: In theatres and On Demand October 10, 2014
    Studio: eOne Films US
    Director: George C. Wolfe

Cast: Hilary Swank, Emmy Rossum, Josh Duhamel, Marcia Gay Harden, Jason Ritter, Ali Larter and Loretta Devine

    Synopsis:
Academy Award® winner Hilary Swank (Conviction, Million Dollar Baby) and rapidly rising star Emmy Rossum (“Shameless”) intertwine in You’re Not You, a surprisingly funny, defiantly unsentimental and starkly moving portrait of a high-stakes friendship between two women – one literally in need of a voice, the other discovering the full power of hers.

Kate (Swank) is a suave, successful classical pianist just diagnosed with ALS (commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Bec (Rossum) is a brash college student and would-be rock singer who can barely keep her wildly chaotic affairs, romantic and otherwise, together. Yet, when Bec takes a job assisting Kate, just as Kate’s marriage to Evan (Josh Duhamel) hits the skids, both women come to rely on what becomes an unconventional, sometimes confrontational and fiercely honest bond. As meticulous, willful Kate begins to rub off on whirlwind, spontaneous Bec – and vice versa – both women find themselves facing down regrets, exploring new territory and expanding their ideas of who they want to be.

Two-time Tony Award winner and theatre legend George C. Wolfe directs this powerful portrait of a transformational friendship with a cast that includes Emmy Award winner Loretta Devine, Ernie Hudson, Frances Fisher, Oscar® winner Marcia Gay Harden, Emmy nominee Jason Ritter, Julian McMahon, Ali Larter and Andrea Savage.

    PREMIERES EXCLUSIVELY ON UP,
    SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12 AT 7:00 P.M. EDT / 6:00 P.M. PDT
Based on Author Beth Pattillo’s Acclaimed Novel Heavens to Betsy

ATLANTA – September 29, 2014 – UP presents the UP Original Movie Heavenly Match, a charming, uplifting romantic comedy about a 30-year-old minister named Casey Hart, who is faced with fork-in-the road decisions with both her career in the ministry and her love life. Starring actress Samaire Armstrong (“Resurrection,” “The O.C.”), Heavenly Match will make its world television premiere on UP on Sunday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m. EDT / 6:00 p.m. PDT.

    Heavenly Match

Filmed outside of Vancouver, Canada, Heavenly Match is produced by Front Street Pictures’ Harvey Kahn (UP’s Far From Home and the upcoming The Tree That Saved Christmas) and directed/executive produced by Michael M. Scott (UP’s Far From Home and the award-nominated Apple Mortgage Cake) and executive produced by Libby Beers. The film is based on Beth Pattillo’s acclaimed novel, Heavens to Betsy, which in turn sprang from Pattillo’s experiences as a female minister. Cara J. Russell wrote the adapted script.

The ensemble cast also includes Brendan Penny (“Motive,” “Whistler”), former Destiny’s Child LeToya Luckett (, “Treme”), Gabrielle Rose (“R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour,” The Sweet Hereafter), Bill Dow (“The X-Files,” “Stargate: Atlantis”), Kevin O’Grady (This Means War, “Arrow”), Jody Thompson (“R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour,” 2012) and Leanne Lapp (“Almost Human,” “The Killing”).

Life would be perfect for 30-year-old, single Reverend Casey Hart (Samaire Armstrong) if it weren't for parishioners who poke into her love life and steal money from the collection box. Not to mention some very inconvenient feelings she is having for her long-time friend, fellow seminary school classmate, and verbal sparring partner, David Swenson (Brenden Penny). Feeling the pressure of leading the congregation and managing the board’s expectations, Casey questions if she should remain a minister in the church or pursue other career opportunities. Unsure of her direction, terrified of professional failure and panicked that David has met someone new, Casey turns to her other best friend from school, Reverend LaRonda “Ronnie” Mason (LeToya Luckett). Can Casey reclaim her confidence while reconciling her clerical robe with high heels and date nights? A fun-loving look at a single girl’s life on the other side of the altar.

“Heavenly Match is a fun, relatable romantic comedy about finding your place in life as seen through the eyes of a little-explored character on television – a female minister,” Barbara Fisher, svp, original programming, UP. “Having gained new fans this year through ‘Resurrection,’ actress Samaire Armstrong is fearless here as the doubting Reverend Casey Hart.”

Heavens to Betsy and Earth to Betsy author Beth Pattillo has written over a dozen books, including the Jane Austen Formidables trilogy, the Sweetgum Knit Lit Society series, and the Regency-set historicals Princess Charming and Her Perfect Earl. In addition, Pattillo is an ordained Christian minister and the co-founder of the Faith Leader program. After many years as a parish minister, she now serves as a spiritual director and retreat leader for Still Waters of Nashville. Originally from Texas, Pattillo is married and is the mother of two children. Her Master of Divinity degree is from Vanderbilt University. She believes a good sense of humor is the biggest blessing of all.

UP presents Heavenly Match, a Front Street production. Starring Samaire Armstrong, Brendan Penny, LeToya Luckett, Gabrielle Rose, Bill Dow, Kevin O’Grady, Jody Thompson and Leanne Lapp. Directed by Michael M. Scott. Produced by Front Street Pictures’ Harvey Kahn. Executive Produced by Michael M. Scott and Libby Beers. Director of Photography is Anthony Metchie. Editor is Alison Grace. Script by Cara J. Russell.

The New York Times Magazine Q&A – Idris Elba, No Stringers Attached

The actor talks about embracing his sinister side, coming to America and clubbing in Ibiza.

    Q&A:

I read that you enjoyed playing your role in “No Good Deed” — this psychotic guy who tortures a family.
Yeah, I have to be careful saying I enjoyed it. Here’s the thing: I just don’t get to play characters like that very often, so it was a nice change for me to play someone that twisted.

Last year, you portrayed Nelson Mandela in a movie based on his autobiography, “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” I heard he gave the film and your portrayal his seal of approval.
He was very excited by it. He saw a little bit of it before he died. I mean, he’s seen himself in films played by different actors, but this film was entirely dedicated to his life story, and he was fascinated by the detail. He was quite close to the project even though he was very ill.

    Did you ever meet him?
No. I don’t regret much, but that’s one thing I do regret.

Since “The Wire” ended in 2008, have you made a conscious decision to avoid playing gangsters like Stringer Bell?
What kind of role do you play after someone like Stringer, you know what I mean? You play another gangster. What’s the point of that? I’ve played the gangster. I try to keep it really varied; it just makes for more of a fun and interesting career.

By now, there’s a whole younger generation that doesn’t know you as Stringer Bell. That must be satisfying. That’s true actually, yeah. The real young generation knows me from movies like “Pacific Rim.” They’ll tell me: “My dad says he knows you from ‘Stringer.’ I’ve never seen that show, but I think you’re awesome in it.”

You moved to New York early in your career because you thought there was a glass ceiling for black actors in Britain. Do you still think that’s the case?
Even when I went to America I didn’t work for four years. It wasn’t like I came to New York and it was the land of milk and honey. It was just as much of a hard graft. But there’s a lot more opportunity nowadays across the board for actors, no matter what color you are, with the Internet and small productions.

You and a group of British actors wrote an open letter to the BBC and other British broadcasters, arguing that they should better represent minorities. How have they reacted?
Especially in the television industry, people know this is something of an issue. Television companies have responded in a way that seems positive. Look, you know, it’s not a law or anything — we just decided to stand up and say: “Hey, try to get more diversity on our screen in England because it’s important to the culture and the culture is very diverse. Let’s see it on TV.”

You worked the night shift at a Ford factory in Britain before you got your break in acting. Do you think it’s good for actors to have some gritty work experience to draw from?
I find that a lot of actors who are good and open to challenges have lived a full life. When you walk into an audition, you have more to say for yourself because you come from the real world. It’s more enticing for directors, I think.

You also worked as a club D.J. Are you still doing that?
I’m coming toward the end of another season in Ibiza. I’ve been recording my shows from Ibiza and putting them on Capital FM, which has been a massive thing for me. Capital is a big radio station in London. Next year I’m going to start putting out some music as a D.J., which is a natural step, and just have as much fun as I can with it.

Recently, a picture of your crotch went viral. What was that like?
Initially it was on every entertainment channel in America. It was all over the Internet, it was trending, it was nuts. Really? Who cares? It was a mike wire.

Maybe you and Jon Hamm can form a support group.
Jon was pretty pissed that people stared at his crotch, and I can see his point, but it didn’t do me no harm. Let’s put it that way. It was kind of funny.

A lot of people say you’re their best hope for a black James Bond. Will that happen?
    Again, another flattering rumor.

Thousands Accuse Ridley Scott of Racist Casting in New Petition

Care2 Activists Outraged Over Racist Casting in Ridley Scott’s New Film, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Urge Sensitivity in the Future

    http://www.thepetitionsite.com/664/448/866/tell-ridley-scott-to-stop-racist-casting/?z00m=21437422

CALIFORNIA — The casting of Ridley Scott’s new film Exodus: Gods and Kings has left thousands outraged over what they see as racist casting. The film tells the story of the Biblical Moses, yet all the Egyptian main characters are played by white actors, and nearly all of the film’s Egyptian villains and servants are played by black actors. A Care2 petition urges Scott to be accurate and racially sensitive when casting for future films; it has over 15,000 signatures.

    VIEW THE PETITION HERE: http://www.care2.com/go/z/RScott

The Care2 petition argues Exodus: Gods and Kings, which will be released this December, is neglectful of the race of biblical African and Middle Eastern characters. It portrays a false message that these figures were in fact Caucasian, while black actors are reserved for more minor roles.

“In his new version of Moses' battle to save his people from slavery, Scott has played into the worst, most outdated assumptions that the heroes of Judaism and Christianity were Caucasian,” the Care2 petition reads.

The IMBD cast list shows a stark contrast between the main and supporting actors. It includes Christian Bale as Moses, Aaron Paul as Joshua, and Sigourney Weaver as Tuya. By contrast, it features Adrian Palmer as “Egyptian thief,” David Olawale Ayinde as an uncredited “Egyptian Civilian Lower Class,” and Emeka Sesay as “Rhamses Royal Servant.”

Activists say casting black male actors as villains shamelessly reinforces racial stereotypes and sends a harmful message to viewers.

The Care2 petition echoes past efforts by Care2 members to raise awareness of racial inconsistencies in Hollywood casting. In March, after it was announced Rooney Mara would play Tiger Lily (a Native American character) in an adaptation of Peter Pan, a Care2 petition demanding Warner Bros. stop casting white actors to play people of color gathered more than 22,000 signatures.

Care2 (www.Care2.com) is a community of 25 million standing together for good. People are making world-changing impact with Care2, starting petitions and supporting each other’s campaigns to help individuals, animals and the environment. A pioneer of online advocacy since 1998, Care2 is a B Corporation, or social enterprise, using the power of business as a force for good.
