Indie team to unleash new game revealing horrors of war

Indie Game team Jørn Holm and Carsten Nissen are set to launch a new free-to-play browser game, Idle Killer, which will highlight the horrors of conflict in one of the most war torn areas on the planet. In an added twist the hero of the story is not the traditional white male, but instead a black female warrior called Boatema who had been drawn into the cruel conflict as a child soldier.

Holm and Nissen, who were assisted by a small group of freelancers from around the world, have developed a storyline which is both realistic and incredible.

Idle Killer is also a game with a message, particularly in relation to the impact of conflict on African child soldiers – something which becomes apparent in the opening minute of the project video. In a bid to aid these traumatized youngsters 10% of earnings from the lifespan of the game will be donated to charities with child soldier support programs.

The game genre is still young and Idle Killer will be the first ever with high quality art work, produced in this instance by none other than the renowned American comic book artist Koi Turnbull (USA), who has previously produced work for the likes of DC Comics and Marvel.

As well as the high quality comic art Idle Killer also includes a storyline, a feature which is quite rare in the Idle Games genre, but which adds to the game’s fascination and appeal.

Just as in any real-life war there are deaths a-plenty. Kills are the currency in this game. They enable the player to buy buildings and upgrades to increase the kill potential.

The story is based on a fictitious country in Africa –Zamunda. Zamunda suffers political corruption and warlords rule the roost in large areas of the country.

The player adopts the role of the heroine Boatema who is now seeking to take control of Zamunda and sort out the whole sorry mess. Other characters in the game include the warlord Uche Okechukwu who directly includes the player in his plans and which gives the story an added twist.

The player starts the game in control of a primitive and small army. The aim is to develop and grow that army and upgrade its killing capabilities. The only way to do this is through kills, giving the game an uncompromising and bloody view of war. The whole action is geared towards black heroine Boatema conquering the world!

Idle Killer is a combination of comic art and subtle references. Add the exaggerated morbid theme, along with amusing news ticker messages, and the game is given a hint of irony as well as gallows humor.

Idle Killer is intended as a free-to-play game so money needs to be raised before its launch. This is being done through the specialist crowd funding website Indiegogo.

Funding can start from as low as $1, but there is a wide range of contribution levels all offering a range of benefits to crowdfunders.

    The Super Sorter Game

Could recycling be made more fun?

As a part of Keep America Beautiful and the Ad Council’s “I Want To Be Recycled” campaign, St. John & Partners has created a new interactive online game called Super Sorter that educates gamers on the different ways items can be sorted and recycled.

    The Super Sorter game

The Super Sorter game takes place in a material recovery facility (MRF) where mixed recyclables are separated by different types of sorters. The goal of the game is to sort all of the materials in the queue as they progress down the conveyor belt and send the recyclables on their way to becoming something new and valuable. If you miss too many recyclables, and they end up in the landfill, you lose the level. Complete all seven levels and you are a Super Sorter!

The game is free and can be played at iwanttoberecycled.org/game.

    Focus Education

The human brain has the capacity to make new neurons and construct neural pathways, no matter your age. The controversial discussion of neuroplasticity and its “miracle effects” creates the question, does brain training really work?

According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, “we propose that research should not investigate whether cognitive training works, but rather should determine what training regimes and what training conditions result in the best transfer effects, investigate the underlying neural and cognitive mechanisms, and finally, investigate for whom cognitive training is most useful.”

On one side of the controversial discussion are those who consider brain training to be hocus-pocus. On the flip side, others like Michael Apstein have spent millions in product development with some of the leading neurologists and video game programmers. A grandpa and entrepreneur, Apstein has developed Focus Education, a “guilt free gaming” solution to help elementary school-aged children focus using neuroplasticity.

African American Entrepreneur Filling The Void In Video Game Industry

West Orange, NJ. February 11, 2013 - African-American teens spend more time daily playing video games than the average American(Nielson Special Report, Sept. 2012) yet are under-represented in the field of technology. New Jersey based PoetCode LLC’s founder and CEO, Derrick Garvin, is helping to diversify the industry.

Garvin is one of the few black developers and founders of MMO (massive multiplayer online game) companies in the nation. An innovator in the industry, his recently released game and integrated book series, Dynasty of the Magi, received the PIA award for Best Transmedia Project last month in New York. Rich in 3D graphics, the game features positive African-American characters seldom portrayed in popular video games. “As writers, we start with what we know,” said Garvin. “I grew up in East Orange, New Jersey and returned to mentor in the neighborhood, which gave me a realistic point of view of the conflicts, verbal degradation, and violence that [protagonist] Faro faces.”

    Beating The Odds
Why is Garvin successful in an industry so few minorities choose to join? He’s no stranger to a challenge. He served ten years of active duty and ten years of reserve duty as a United States Naval Officer and Aviator. While serving his country, Garvin represented the 2% (Dept. of Defense, 2002) of African-Americans in the Navy who become pilots. Garvin remarked on his experience, “Traveling the world broadens your horizons and allows you to see how we are all connected, struggle with conflict, and overcome.”

    Legacy of Leadership
Derrick is the son of the late Mildred Barry Garvin who served two terms in the New Jersey General Assembly. Among her many contributions, she was the first African-American to serve on the board of directors of the East Orange Public Library and the East Orange School District board of education.

“She encouraged us to read early. My mother would let us buy any comic book, game (if it had a challenging rule set, like chess) or book to spark our interest,” explained Garvin “A geek in the hood, I immersed myself in sci fi and fantasy, which led to an interest in science, math and writing in my school work.”
