Colored Waiting Room
by Patricia Pope

This is the story of Alberta Graham, a young black security officer in a rural Tennessee nuclear power plant. Alberta’s battles begin when she arrives at the Cherokee Nuclear Plant and is greeted by not-so-happy good ole boys. This plant is predominately white and the only other woman is Laura James, an office clerk, who is ordered to tell Alberta to get rid of her braids.

One day on a walk through the facility, Alberta stumbles upon a room with the words, Colored Waiting Room, scrawled over the door, and it becomes sort of a refuge for her.

Determined to get a handle on the corruption at Cherokee, which includes theft, drug trafficking and government racketeering, she runs into a brick wall on every turn.

After a short while Alberta settles into a relationship with Jeremy Chambers, who’s in a relationship with Candi Summers. When Jeremy leaves Alberta her world is shattered.

In a constant battle with Chief Ronnie Klein, who utterly despises her, Alberta is forced to involve the EOC. After a lengthy process she wins her case, Klein is transferred, and new upper-level management is installed. But, in the end there isn’t much to celebrate for Alberta is now a lonely woman on the brink of emotional despair!

Read our interview below:

DT:  Colored Waiting Room is such an intriguing read, why did you write it? How much research was necessary?
PP:  Writing is more than literature or a well written conveyance of thought for me. It is a responsibility - my cosmic assignment, if you will. I therefore must write what reflects a degree of spiritual understanding. In respect to the research, I write about situations that I have experienced and compile that experience with the experience of others. Research is a must, along with interviews.

DT: I fell in love with Alberta! Is she based on your character? Someone you know? Or is this total creativity?
PP: COLORED WAITING ROOM is me, you, and any other who don't have a voice or forum. It is all the unsung participants of the Affirmative Action/EOC Era.

DT:  Your work shows such professionalism, how long have you been writing?
PP:  I wrote my first published work at age nine- a "quirky" little song that now causes me to blush. However, my parents had it published and it serves as a reminder that my destiny was given early on.

DT:  What motivates you?
PP: I am motivated by life. When I typed the final four lines to COLORED WAITING ROOM, I walked to my lounge chair, sat down, and had a major heart attack. Prior to that my motivation only had to do with reaching a set goal.

DT: What have readers said about, Colored Waiting Room?
PP: The response from the readers of COLORED WAITING ROOM has been overwhelming. What a delight! The readers have inspired me and comforted me with their exciting and most rewarding reviews. The highest compliment I can receive as an author, "When is your next book? I can't wait to buy it."

DT:  What are some of the things you do to make sure readers know about you and your work?
PP:  I depend largely on word-of-mouth. But I have done book signings and travel the collegiate circuit lecturing.

DT:  Do you have any upcoming events you'd like to discuss such as book signings, panel discussions, seminars, workshops, etc.
PP: Currently I am scheduled to begin a twenty city tour beginning in February 2006.

DT:  What's next for Patricia Pope?
PP: I have two works in progress. The one that I complete first will be my next release.

DT:  Patricia, we thank you so much for this interview and we pray that God will continue to richly Bless You!
