I was saddened to learn of Julian’s Bond’ death today. While I know our heroes won’t live forever, I can only hope as their torches dim, the ones left to pick up those torches are worthy of the title “leader.”
My heart bleeds and my eyes leak. Julian Bond was always quiet, determined, and focused. He used his gifts with grace and dignity. I am glad he was here to see black activism rise again, after a long period of non-action and scattered focus.
Today, while I understand the black rage that is the base of the Black Lives Matter movement, the ability to recognize and utilize your colleagues is something that is important to any and every endeavor.
Imagine asking someone to help you get ______________, while you treat that person with disdain and disrespect. Black Lives Matter is a cause needing help from every quarter and all races. We need assistance from those in both high and low places. In order to distinguish ourselves as more than just “other” we need to act accordingly – and treat everyone with the same respect we desire for ourselves.
Can we keep the Black Lives Matter movement moving forward with grace, determination, dignity and respect?
There are many “other” people on our side, now is not the time to alienate anyone. Nor can we afford to alienate a single person. Not ONE.
The thing that comes to mind when I hear Julian Bond is quiet fire. He seldom raised his voice, but when angry you knew he was pissed. Behaving with grace is more difficult than in your face activism, but in the long run, it is the more effective action.
We want to move forward to PROGRESS. In order to maintain our progression, we will need tempered leaders who can speak to the masses and to whom the masses will listen.
The knowledge that Julian Bond has left the planet will sadden me for a long time. However, in my heart I cling to the hope that as one light leaves, another torch is lit. May those who bear these torches be aware of the power that goes along with the title of “leader.” Leader means this movement is no longer just about you.
Julian Bond was an Icon. He will be remembered as a quiet, determined warrior. Much can be accomplished without being rude and abrasive. Julian Bond taught us that lesson. Rest in peace, sweet Julian. You will be profoundly missed.
