Person of Interest
Just in case you missed it, I am an avid Person of Interest fan. I love a show with good guys and bad guys you can fall in love with. There is just one problem. We live in the real world in America, circa 2016 and some shit must change. Unfortunately, no one is coming to our rescue.
Black folks are under siege, right now. We are hunted and shot like dogs in the streets by the same police force paid by our tax dollars. White folks have no problem with expressing how they wish we would go the f..k away, as if they had no role in how “we” got here in the first place. It has been reported a republican billionaire just wished he could move all our brown, black, yellow and red asses somewhere ELSE. As if we are not Americans.
As black folks, we vote, but then forget there are other steps required. Have you met any of your elected officials? Do you contact them REGULARLY to express your wishes and find out how they plan on voting on bills that will impact your daily life? Hell, do you even know your elected officials names?
When I say “elected officials” I am talking about every elected official from the dog catcher to the US Senator. You should have several officials you can contact if you get hemmed up, if something happens that should not or if something needs to happen that should. They are more responsive if you have already checked in a few times (or a few hundred times) and they know who you are.
Elected officials work for us. Recently, our fake ass Republican governor shafted the city of Baltimore, yet again. He cut two (that’s 2) programs designed to help young black men. One program, Safe Streets hires convicted criminals who want to give back to the community. They are vetted and trained in de-escalation techniques to keep our young, black men from gunning each other down in the street. So far, it has been established in 6 areas around the city, with proven results. The newest area is Sandtown-Winchester, the hotspot of the recent riots.
The other program affected both men and women with drug charges. This program allowed them to be released early, provided they completed the 18 month program to assist with re-entry, job training, interviewing skills, budgets, etc.
Both programs have been quite effective. The 2nd program had a recidivism rate of under 3%.
When I called the governor’s office, I inquired if I needed to be a republican to voice my opinion. The staffer seemed taken aback, yet, the governor has governed as if the entire state shares his disdain for the city of Baltimore and it’s mostly black residents.
The election this year may be the most consequential of our lifetimes. I want you to treat it as such and make sure you not only vote, but hold your elected officials responsible at every opportunity. Wake up and pay attention to what all your elected officials DO, how they vote and hold them accountable.
THAT is your job. Are you willing to get in the real game? Or will you allow your vote to go unappreciated, yet again?
