“Say Yes to the Next Level,” Nov. 10-12, 2016, is intended to challenge conference participants to take existing dfree® tools and strategies to the next level of financial freedom and wellness. The conference will encourage participants to reevaluate personal values, habits, attitudes and relationships in order to prepare themselves to move toward financial wholeness. The $40 registration fee for the conference includes lunches and can be submitted online via: http://bit.ly/2cLAyxb.

“When you are paying last month’s bills with next week’s check, when you’re drowning in consumer debt, you’ve lost options and lost control of your life. You’re existence promotes the welfare of others,” Soaries said. “We have to have this conversation. The reality is that we’re spending without thinking. Most Americans in general, and African Americans in particular, live without a budget. We don’t have spending plans or savings. We have no emergency fund. We don’t have a retirement plan or investments. In a capitalistic society, to have no capital capacity is to be non-existent.”

The dfree® Financial Freedom Movement is a practical yet holistic approach to financial security that exposes root causes of negative financial habits and provides financial literacy, faith-based methods and community support to help individuals achieve and maintain financial success.

The informative, uplifting and celebratory financial freedom conference is being held at the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens and is expected to attract some 2,500 participants. It will include concerts, networking, youth activities and dfree® training and support. Sessions are available for beginners through seasoned dfree® participants.

MALACO SETS RELEASE FOR GREENLEAF – THE GOSPEL COMPANION SOUNDTRACK

Music from the OWN Hit Series produced by Lionsgate, Featuring Stars Deborah Joy Winans and Desiree Ross, Plus Mavis Staples, The McCrary Sisters, Melinda Doolittle, Reverend Shirley Caesar, and Dottie Peoples & The Peoples Choice Chorale

Malaco Records, the legendary Jackson, Mississippi-based soul/blues/gospel label, has announced the release of Greenleaf – The Gospel Companion Soundtrack Volume 1 in conjunction with Lionsgate, a premier next generation global content leader. The album is a musical reflection of the hit OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network original drama series Greenleaf. Malaco’s dominant role in the gospel music field led the series’ producers to join forces for the creation and release of this very special album. The album’s tracks, produced by Tim Lauer, Russell Ziecker and BeBe Winans, are rolling out digitally on a track-by-track basis. The full 14-track album will be released on CD and digital on August 26.

From award-winning writer/producer Craig Wright (Lost, Six Feet Under, Brothers and Sisters), Greenleaf takes viewers into the unscrupulous world of the Greenleaf family and their sprawling Memphis megachurch, where scandalous secrets and lies are as numerous as the faithful. Born of the church, the Greenleaf family love and care for each other, but beneath the surface lies a den of iniquity -- greed, adultery, sibling rivalry and conflicting values -- that threatens to tear apart the very core of the faith that holds them together. The first season of Greenleaf, featuring music heard on the album, currently airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on OWN. Greenleaf debuted to record ratings on June 21, becoming the #1 series debut in OWN history with over 3 million viewers.

Tommy Couch Jr., Malaco Music Group President, commented, “We’re delighted to team with Lionsgate and OWN on Greenleaf. Gospel music has long been the lifeblood of Malaco and a key element in the series’ narrative so this a very comfortable fit for us. We have been pioneers in the field of gospel on many different occasions and I believe this project will prove to be another of those special occasions.”

Russell Ziecker, Lionsgate Executive Vice President, Television Music stated, “We wanted first and foremost to reflect the tonality of the wonderful show that producer Craig Wright has created here with Greenleaf, while feeling we had an opportunity to challenge the precepts and definition of what ‘gospel music’ is, or can be and mean. At every turn, we tried to be true and authentic, while stretching the boundaries of this genre to create something special – and hopefully, timeless. It seemed a natural fit to take a pioneering project like this to pioneer label Malaco, so we’re pleased and proud to partner with such a prominent player in the gospel space on this release.”

One of those most prominently featured on Greenleaf – The Gospel Companion Soundtrack is Deborah Joy Winans. Her voice is heard on many of the album’s selections, including “The Master’s Calling,” the lead track that is soon to be available. An actress and singer, she is, of course, a member of famed Winans family and recently played her real-life aunt CeCe Winans on stage in the musical Born for This. In Greenleaf, she portrays ‘Charity Greenleaf-Satterlee,’ the daughter of Bishop James Greenleaf (Keith David). Deborah commented, “This was my first time recording a song and what a musical ride it has been! Bringing Charity to life through the power of music was challenging yet a beautiful experience. Growing up in a family of natural-born singers certainly came in handy when I took on this incredible role.”

Greenleaf’s main title theme is “The Root,” performed by Mavis Staples, who is one of the most celebrated R&B/gospel artists of all time. In a very real way, her family group, The Staple Singers, provided the musical voice for the Civil Rights Movement as they worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She is a multiple Grammy Award® winner and is scheduled to receive the Kennedy Center Honor later this year.

The McCrary Sisters – Beverly Ann, Deborah, Regina and Alfreda – come from a similarly celebrated gospel music linage as the daughters of Rev. Sam McCrary of the Fairfield Four. The Sisters are featured on the track “Ring Them Bells.” Regina McCrary toured with Bob Dylan, the song’s composer, earlier in her career and is heard on both his Saved and Shot of Love albums.

Cast member Desiree Ross, who plays ‘Sophia Greenleaf,’ is featured on “(We’ll Understand It Better) By and By,” the album’s final track. The actress who just turned 17, most recently starred opposite Dolly Parton in A Country Christmas Story.

Melinda Doolittle, featured on “Say Something,” first caught the attention of the public as an American Idol finalist in 2007. She’s worked in a variety of genres with a vast array of performers, including Michael McDonald, Kirk Franklin, Aaron Neville, Alabama, Jonny Lang, BeBe and CeCe Winans and Vanessa Bell Armstrong.

“The First Lady of Gospel Music,” the Reverend Shirley Caesar contributes the classic “Satan, We’re Gonna Tear Your Kingdom Down” to the album. She’s been a leading light in gospel for six decades and is a Grammy® winner 11 times over and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Known as “The Songbird of the South,” Dottie Peoples is heard on Greenleaf’s “Get Your House in Order.” A prolific recording artist, she has no fewer than twelve full-length albums in the Malaco Records catalog.

Greenleaf – The Gospel Companion Soundtrack Vol. 1 track listing is as follows:

    1) The Root (feat. Mavis Staples) (Greenleaf Main title)

    2) Ring Them Bells (feat. McCrary Sisters)

    3) (God Bless the) Broken Road (feat. Deborah Joy Winans)

    4) Testimony (feat. Deborah Joy Winans)

    5) Say Something (feat. Melinda Doolittle)

    6) Satan, We’re Gonna Tear Your Kingdom Down (feat. Shirley Caesar)

    7) Let Love Find a Way (feat. Deborah Joy Winans)

    8) The Master’s Calling (feat. Deborah Joy Winans)

    9) Battle Hymn of the Republic (feat. Deborah Joy Winans)

    10) Get Your House In Order (feat. Dottie Peoples & The Peoples

    11) Take Me To the Water (feat. Deborah Joy Winans)

    12) Blessed (feat. Deborah Joy Winans)

    13) River (feat. Deborah Joy Winans)

    14) (We’ll Understand It Better) By and By (feat. Desiree Ross)

Greenleaf – The Gospel Companion Soundtrack Volume 1 is executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, Craig Wright and Russell Ziecker. Ziecker and Tim Lauer are soundtrack producers.

Event at Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Highlights September’s 6th Annual Gospel Music Heritage Month • 2014 Honorees Include Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin and Sen. Blanche Lincoln

     EVOLUTION OF GOSPEL

(BLACK PR WIRE) – ATLANTA – September 8, 2014 – The Gospel Music Heritage Month Foundation (@gmhmonth) is proud to announce that UP (@UPtv) will sponsor and help promote the annual "Evolution of Gospel" celebration at The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The sixth annual event commemorates the month of September as Gospel Music Heritage Month (GMHM) and features scintillating performances and special tributes. This year’s honorees include Gospel music legends Yolanda Adams and Kirk Franklin, and former Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, who, along with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), was instrumental in the passage of the resolution that established Gospel Music Heritage Month.

This awards event will be held on September 15, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. ET and will be produced by Ernest Walker of Walker Entertainment Group, Houston, TX. Musical tributes will be rendered by some of the most anointed Gospel vocalists including Kathy Taylor, Edwin Hawkins, Dottie Peoples, Stephen Hurd and Tasha Page Lockhart, among others.

Charles Humbard, CEO of UP and who was instrumental in the creation of GMHM, said, “No other music uplifts like gospel music. It is a part of the fabric of America and our heritage at UP and we are pleased to be a part of this terrific celebration.”

Congresswoman Lee says of the event, “Gospel music is an American art form that has spanned hundreds of years and across several generations and has touched millions of lives around the world while demonstrating its profound ability to transcend secular musical genres. Gospel music reaches all denominations and racial groups. From the Tennessee Valley, to the Appalachia, to New York to Houston, to Mississippi to Atlanta gospel music is sung by many different people all over the United States and the world. This month, we are commemorating those people that bring joy and comfort to soldiers on the battlefield and many others. We are all reminded by the song ‘Amazing Grace’ that was written by former boat captain John Newton. Gospel Music speaks to everyone and the Gospel Music legislation is important because it highlights all of those stories of gospel music and the early leaders in gospel music. The influence of it can be found infused in all forms of secular music including rock & roll, country, R&B, and countless other styles. I am thankful that we are continuing to commemorate and designate the month of September as Gospel Music Heritage Month which will celebrate and honor the heritage of gospel music. Gospel Music Heritage Month has been celebrated in the Halls of Congress as well as the Administration as well as other locations around the nation. We hope to see many more events like this across the nation in the month of September.”

Carl Davis, chairman of the Gospel Music Heritage Month Foundation said, “Our annual gala has become one of the most anticipated events on the Gospel music calendar, and it gets bigger and better every year. The live performances and tributes to the great history of this music genre make the event like no other. We will honor two gospel icons, Kirk Franklin and Yolanda Adams, and our friend Senator Blanche Lincoln, the co-sponsor of that historical resolution declaring September as ‘Gospel Music Heritage Month.’ The efficacy of these individuals has impacted the genre of gospel music with historical relevance and meaning. They have indelibly written on the consciousness of the human spirit the unyielding power of the gospel through song. I wish to thank the leadership of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Thomas A. Dorsey Convention of Choirs and Choruses, Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar, and the Gospel Heritage Foundation for joining the Gospel Music Heritage Month Foundation in this celebration. Together we can take gospel music to its rightful place in the history of this great nation.”

In 2008, Congresswoman Jackson Lee introduced the historic resolution, H.J. Res. 90, after meeting in her U.S. Capital office with Charley Humbard, Gospel Music Advocate Carl Davis and Entertainment Executive Alvin Williams. The group met to discuss the rich contributions of Gospel music to this country and to provide the necessary support and leadership to have September designated as “Gospel Music Heritage Month” across the nation. With the support of Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), the bipartisan passage of the bill helped to usher in a new national focus to honor Gospel music for its valuable and longstanding contributions to the culture of the United States. Congresswoman Jackson Lee then led the effort with Gospel Music Advocate Carl Davis to create the Gospel Music Heritage Month Foundation that celebrates Gospel music annually.

Previous honorees of the Evolution of Gospel event, include Gospel icons and trailblazers Dr. Bobby Jones (Bobby Jones Gospel); Cathy Hughes (Radio One); Charley Humbard (UP TV); Don Jackson (Stellar Awards); Congressman John Lewis, who was honoured as a salute to the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington; and Gospel icon Richard Smallwood, along with Bill Hearn of Capital Music Group for their major contributions to the legacy of Gospel music.

(BPRW) Marcus “Elder Mac” McFarlin wins National Gospel Singing Contest for Stroke Awareness

(BLACK PR WIRE) – DALLAS – May 23, 2014 — The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and UP TV announced today that Marcus “Elder Mac” McFarlin of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is the Grand Prize Winner of the “Most Powerful Voices” online gospel singing competition.

McFarlin is a contemporary gospel artist who released his first album, “Addicted to Praise,” in 2011. Now, as the winner of the “Most Powerful Voices” competition, McFarlin has the opportunity to perform at a 2015 Stellar Awards Showcase, receive vocal performance equipment from Roland and a personal coaching session with RCA Inspiration Artist Deon Kipping, from the Gospel Music Association (GMA) and a cash prize among other prizes.

Gospel artist Latice Crawford-Spain, A&R executives and a Roland Corporation musicality expert judged the top 10 winners and selected McFarlin.

“I loved the control he had,” said Crawford-Spain, RCA Inspiration artist. “Marcus stood out to me because he had a very striking voice.”

The online competition, now in the fifth year, is open to independent artists, groups and choirs who sing gospel, praise, worship and holy hip-hop. It’s a unique and fun way to share potentially life-saving stroke information.

Debbie Gann from Mounds, Oklahoma won Fan Favorite, rising to the top from online votes received May 1-15 while the judges were scoring the top ten.

“The greatest prize of all is that every person who registered to participate as either a competitor or voter receives monthly stroke awareness and prevention information,” said Crawford-Spain. “Anyone who is walking and breathing can have a stroke, but it's especially important for African-Americans to be aware, because we have higher risk factors, such as high blood pressure and diabetes that often cause strokes. It is important for everyone to know the causes, signs and methods to hopefully prevent stroke. Sometimes it can be as simple as changing your diet or exercising more.”

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and the No. 1 cause of preventable disability. “The contest is important because it helps people reduce their risks and learn what do to in a stroke emergency,” said Rani Whitfield, M.D. a family practitioner in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and an American Stroke Association spokesperson.

“Most Powerful Voices” is an initiative of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Power To End Stroke cause campaign to reach Americans, with a special emphasis on African-Americans, who are disproportionately affected by stroke. Power To End Stroke strives to close the stroke gap through culturally relevant events, tools and educational resources. UP TV presents and administers the contest on behalf of the Power to End Stroke.
